Salary: This position traditionally starts at an hourly rate of $16.24 an hour. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.
 
Location: This position is located in INDOT Crawfordsville.

About the Job:

This position will serve as a Traffic Engineer Intern for the Crawfordsville Technical Services Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation. The Intern will be responsible for a variety of division projects and support. The objective of the position is to provide a valuable learning experience for the intern, as well as to assist the agency in completing their assignments and responsibilities. The Intern will report to the District Traffic Engineer.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:
  • To assist the District Traffic Engineer in locating intersections and sections of roadways with a high crash frequency in Crawfordsville District and make improvement recommendations. The results of this project will help improve the safety of the traveling public.
  • To achieve this result, the position will:
  • Gather the information and guidance needed from the MUTCD.
  • Filter crash data by specific locations.
  • Use RoadHAT to determine the index of crash cost and frequency.
  • Use the Intersection Decision Guide to determine the best alternative for the intersection.
  • Prepare a cost estimate for each alternative.
  • Present findings to District Traffic Engineer.
  • Other duties as assigned

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Working towards a Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering or related field
  • Relevant work experience preferred
  • Basic knowledge of the mission and role of INDOT
  • Basic understanding of state policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Knowledge of state government structure, administrative procedures, and the legislative process
  • Ability to research, draft, and edit data and reports
  • Analytical skills
  • Ability to handle multiple projects
  • Ability to operate computer tools
  • Good research and writing skills
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills suitable for a wide variety of contacts
  • Confidence and ability to learn on the job and adapt quickly to changing circumstances
